The Veteran Difference

Look around your neighborhood. See the lady walking her dog? The guy mowing his lawn down the block? They look just like everyone else, don’t they? Unless you have met them, or seen them in their uniform on a holiday like Veterans Day, they look just like any other neighbor. But there is a difference. Your neighbor (or friend, loved one, or yourself) put their lives on the line for their country, and gave up part of their life to defend us and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. The oath that they took is simple:

“I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

The most interesting thing about the oath is that it swears allegiance not to a country, not to a person, but to a document. So our veterans swear to defend our principles, not just our physical country. And they risk themselves, their futures and part of their lives to defend words on a piece of paper (whether it is parchment, wood pulp, hemp, whatever).

The difference is that they did more than talk about defending the country, they took action. And because they did (and do, every day), we have the one document in the world that can be said to stand for liberty and freedom.

Many people talk about “rights” and “freedom”. Veterans stepped up. And that’s the difference.

To all of the veterans out there, thank you for stepping up. And thank you for defending the Constitution.

LPNY Files 31.6K Signatures for 2018 Candidates

SUFFOLK COUNTY, New York, August 22nd, 2018 – From the Libertarian Party of New York – At 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2018 the Libertarian Party of New York filed petitions with 31,615 signatures at the New York State Board of Elections in Albany to place Larry Sharpe on the ballot this November for New York State Governor, along with Andrew Hollister for Lieutenant Governor, Chris Garvey for Attorney General, and Cruger Gallaudet for Comptroller.

Over 31,000 registered New York voters signed, indicating they want another choice in 2018. LPNY Chair Jim Rosenbeck said “a vote for Larry Sharpe in November is a vote for personal liberty, economic opportunity and hope for the future of New York State.”

Larry Sharpe has travelled extensively throughout New York State holding meet and greets, town halls, and interviews, including many smaller towns and cities that gubernatorial candidates don’t normally campaign, striving to rethink government and empower the people of New York. He is speaking to larger groups as his campaign continues and he has also garnered a strong social media following, outperforming all of the incumbent governor’s opponents on Facebook. For more information, please visit and

Petitioning began six weeks ago, on July 10, 2018. The Libertarian Party set a goal of 30,000 signatures to get their statewide candidates on the ballot. Only 15,000 signatures were required, but the LPNY needed at least double to ensure they could defeat any challenges. Not only did the LPNY reach their goal, but beat it by 1,615 signatures!

The LPNY had double the volunteer effort this year than in 2016, especially with excitement of Mr. Sharpe’s strong campaign that has inspired numerous volunteers and supporters. In total, the party collected 31,615 signatures. Over the past weekend, the LPNY team in Schenectady sorted and bound all of the petitions and brought them to the Board of Elections for filing. They are now awaiting the official notifications from the New York State Board of Elections.

Larry Sharpe (L) is a Bronx native, a Marine Corps veteran, an entrepreneur, and a management consultant with 15 years of experience mentoring international executives, entrepreneurs & sales people. He is also a teacher, previously serving as a guest instructor for business management and leadership at institutions such as Yale University, Columbia University, Baruch College and John Jay College. He is now running for Governor of New York in order to make education more effective through innovation, reform the criminal justice system to focus on rehabilitation, and build an economy that works for all of New York State.
